New netted vineyard canopy at Koonunga Hill
$1 million netting enclosure protects grapes at Penfolds vineyard.
Delivering on Penfolds Evermore Programs ambition to create a world where future generations can thrive, ‘Young’ Koonunga Hill vineyard in the Barossa Valley has had a $1 million infrastructure investment with the installation of a new enclosed nylon vineyard canopy.

The canopy will protect the 14-hectare planting of grapes used to produce Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for some of Penfolds best-known wines: Grange, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, St Henri Shiraz, and RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz.
Inspired by the success of similar canopies used in citrus horticulture, the vineyard canopy is Penfolds latest innovation to adapt its viticulture practices to suit changing environmental conditions, mitigate the predicted temperature increases and is reflective of the Evermore Programs third pillar 'Towards Sustainability’.
While the experiment is still in its early phase, the increasing use of technology to analyse real-time data on growing conditions has delivered promising results with grapes harvested in the 2024 vintage ripening earlier and producing vibrant coloured fruit that’s superior in quality and flavour to fruit harvested in vineyards outside the canopy.
Evermore is Penfolds commitment to making a positive contribution to community and is focused on three strategic priorities: community and culture, future winemaking and sustainability.
