THE MAGIC OF PENFOLDS BEGINS IN THE VINEYARD

The selection of vineyard sites and quality of fruit has always underpinned Penfolds reputation. Over a nearly 180-year history, Penfolds has owned and leased some of the best wine regions in Australia and around the world, and work with carefully selected growers to stay true to our fruit-first philosophy of multi-vineyard, multi-regional sourcing.

Today, Penfolds wine regions span both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Each country brings something new to the Penfolds portfolio, while maintaining the enduring House Style and winemaking philosophy that Penfolds has proudly upheld since 1844. At the heart is Penfolds Magill Estate. Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the first vines here back in 1844, and even today Magill Vineyard still contributes fruit to Grange when vintage conditions allow.

The Penfolds winemaking philosophy is unbound by country, vine or time.

AUSTRALIA

Penfolds-owned vineyards are located on prime land throughout Australia’s finest South Australia wine regions including; Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, as well as other esteemed Australian wine regions such as Henty and Tasmania. We also work with carefully selected growers to stay true to our fruit-first philosophy of going where the fruit grows best. Some of these grower relationships span more than a century. Learn more about our carefully curated Australian wine regions below.

ADELAIDE HILLS

On the city’s doorstep, the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills is ideal for cultivating most of our whites and pinots. The combination of high altitude and cool climate gives the wines their contemporary and distinctive profile.

Adelaide Hills vineyards contribute fruit to our award-winning Reserve Bin A Chardonnay, St Henri Shiraz and Cellar Reserve range.

BAROSSA VALLEY

The ancient soils of the Barossa Valley are steeped in history, including our Kalimna Block 42 vines which were planted in the 1880s and are thought to be the oldest continuously-producing cabernet sauvignon vines in the world.

Barossa Valley vineyards contribute fruit to some of our most iconic wines from Grange to Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 28 Shiraz and the sub-region expression of Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz.

MAGILL ESTATE

Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the vineyard at Magill Estate in 1843. A single vineyard monopole, it is one of the world’s few urban vineyards.

The vineyard is 100% shiraz and fruit from the vineyard contributes to Magill Estate Shiraz, with select parcels going to our flagship, Grange, in chosen vintages. It has a warm, dry climate with moderating sea breeze.

COONAWARRA

Weathered limestone under the famed terra rossa soils and a relatively cool climate make Coonawarra one of Australia’s most important fine wine regions.

The Coonawarra region is best known for cabernet sauvignon and shiraz, contributing fruit to Grange, Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz and many of our special Bin Series wines.

EDEN VALLEY

South Australia has gained worldwide recognition for producing definitive world-class riesling, with the Eden Valley at the head of the field. The region’s high altitude and cool climate induces riesling with great finesse and elegance.

Eden Valley vineyards contribute fruit for our acclaimed Bin 51 Riesling.

MCLAREN VALE

Established in the 1840s, the McLaren Vale wine region has a classic Mediterranean climate with cool winters, warm summers, low rainfall and moderating sea breezes.

McLaren Vale vineyards contribute fruit to St Henri Shiraz, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon.

HENTY

The cool-maritime growing season, Great Southern Ocean breezes and free draining gravelly loams over red clays, weathered basalt and pockets of limestone, make the Henty wine region an ideal place to grow the classic Burgundian grape varieties.

The Henty region contributes parcels to Bin 23 Pinot Noir, Bin 311 Chardonnay and Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay.

TASMANIA

The island of Tasmania, despite its geological diversity, is the only Australian state-wide Geographical Indication. Penfolds sources cool climate A-grade chardonnay, pinot noir and gewürztraminer from the Tamar Valley near Launceston and southerly Derwent Valley vineyards near Hobart.

Typically, these vineyards contribute fruit to Cellar Reserve wines, Bin 311 Chardonnay and Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay.

TUMBARUMBA

The sub-alpine slopes of Tumbarumba, at the foot of the Snowy Mountains and the Great Dividing Range, are home to the highest altitude vineyards in New South Wales.

Chardonnay ripens slowly and crisply in this cool-climate region making it ideal for Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay in some years.

CALIFORNIA

The Penfolds Californian story started more than twenty years ago when Penfolds winemakers first imported heritage vine cuttings from esteemed South Australian vineyards and planted them in Californian soil. For the last five harvests the Penfolds winemaking team have been on the ground crafting the current Californian release wines. Discover the flavours of Penfolds Californian wine regions below.

NAPA VALLEY

The Napa Valley is known for producing award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit is typically concentrated and full of succulent acidity with a structural tannin profile.

Since 1998, Penfolds winemakers have worked on the ground in the Napa Valley building Penfolds presence and the region now contributes premium fruit to Quantum Cabernet, Bin 149 Cabernet, and Bin 704 Napa Valley Cabernet.

PASO ROBLES

Paso Robles is located on California’s central coast, between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Camatta Hills vineyard in Paso Robles is of symbolic importance to Penfolds.

It started in 1997 when land was purchased and then in 1998 when we imported a selection of heritage vines from our Kalimna and Magill Estate vineyards.

SONOMA

Sonoma County is an American Viticultural Area, located north of San Francisco, bordering the Pacific Ocean. An esteemed winemaking region that produces some of the finest examples of Californian cabernet.

It is one of the premium sourcing regions for Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz.

FRANCE

In recent years we have re-ignited our love affair with France, a special place for Penfolds, where our first chief winemaker Max Schubert was inspired to create Grange in the 1950s. Since 2019, Penfolds winemakers have been working in iconic French wine regions of Champagne and Bordeaux.

BORDEAUX

One of the world’s most famous wine regions, Bordeaux is located in South-Western France. In 2022, we continued an endeavour started more than 70 years ago when Penfolds first Chief Winemaker Max Schubert first visited and was inspired to create Grange.

The inaugural French release is led by Penfolds II, a wine made in partnership with one of Bordeaux’s most respected winemaking Houses, Dourthe.

CHAMPAGNE

The historic Champagne wine region is located in North-Eastern France. Since 2019, Penfolds has partnered with family owned Champagne House Thiénot for our limited release champagnes.

There are now four in the series, including; a vintage Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs, and a non-vintage Champagne Rosé.

CHINA

Penfolds relationship in China began in 1893 and continues today with our first Chinese Winemaking Trial and wines from our One by Penfolds limited release range. The winemaking team have been working with growers in Shangri-La in the Yunnan province and Ningxia in north-central China. Discover the unique wonders of wine from Penfolds Chinese wine region below.

NINGXIA

The Ningxia winemaking region is located in China’s north-west, and in the south-west Yunnan province. Exploratory work has revealed promising characteristics in fruit quality and flavour expression, infrastructure, and vineyards. In 2022, Penfolds released its first China made wine under the One by Penfolds range.
