Andrew Caillard MW

"2022 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz lives up to its reputation as the second wine to Grange. The wine is superbly refined, generous and chocolaty and will cellar for years to come. In many respects, it is the quintessential Penfolds wine offering drinkers the best of craftsmanship, multi-regional sourcing, and style."

Tyson Stelzer

"The great 2022 season has delivered a Bin 389 of impact and presence. The depth and breadth of supple black and red fruits of shiraz is melded seamlessly with the blackcurrant and firm, fine tannin profile of cabernet sauvignon and not insubstantial presence of sweet, dark chocolate American oak. A strong framework of firm tannins sets classic Bin 389 endurance. Another one for the ages. 95 points."

"This wine is both an ode to tradition and an expression of modern excellence; it is at once familiar yet continues to indulge even the most discerning palates with its layered complexity."

– Andrew Baldwin, Penfolds Winemaker

2022 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz

Taste Description

PALATE

Instantly fresh and fleshy. Some overt single-varietal cabernet and shiraz fruits still sit separate ...time will unite.. Expected liquorice, stewed plum and blackcurrant, with dark chocolate and mocha in the background. Savoury and salivating –mouth-watering, succulent acidity. This acidity interplays with integrated tannins –coating the mouth and adding length.. Yes, impressive length, with concentration, and a mandatory Bin 389 'sweet' core; oak completely absorbed. Polished and refined.

The Bin 389 Story

Bin 389 is one of Australia’s great cellaring red wines. First produced in 1960, its history is connected with the development of Grange and Max Schubert’s ambition of creating a ‘dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other’. Named after its original binning compartment at Magill cellars, Bin 389 is the most popular wine in the Australian secondary wine market because of its heritage, consistency and reputation.
