The Penfolds Riesling Story
Purity, Precision and Place
Riesling is a beautifully aromatic varietal with a distinguished place in Penfolds white wine story.
Our history with the varietal reaches back to founders Mary and Christopher Penfold. However, it was through the vision of Chief Winemaker Max Schubert in the 1970s that our modern and uniquely Australian style of Riesling emerged.
Today this revered varietal finds expression in our Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling, Cellar Reserve Polish Hill Riesling and Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling.

The Typicity of Penfolds Riesling
Our Rieslings exemplify classic varietal characters in striking clarity. Carried by naturally high acidity and concentrated palates, they promise immediate enjoyment as well as exceptional longevity in the cellar.
Unlike the sweet Riesling styles of Germany or other European regions – where residual sugar often balances an extremely high acidity – we craft a dry Riesling style, achieving balance through fruit intensity and structural finesse.
To preserve vibrancy, our Rieslings undergo stainless-steel fermentation and are bottled immediately upon completion. This approach also ensures each wine retains a pure and expressive regional stamp.

Eden Valley Riesling: Elegance at Altitude
South Australian Riesling regions, Eden Valley and Clare Valley, have earnt international acclaim for producing some of the country’s most distinguished expressions.
Eden Valley, a high-altitude sub-region of the Barossa, offers a distinctive terroir where Riesling flourishes in cool conditions and mineral-rich schist soils. Bin 51 is a quintessential expression of this region – fragrant, with intense rose petal aromas, and with an unmistakable clarity and structure.

Clare Valley Riesling: Intense and Mineral-laced
Clare Valley’s hallmark diurnal temperature variation – warm days followed by cool nights – is pivotal in shaping Rieslings of exceptional intensity.
Translating this unique terroir, Our Cellar Reserve Polish Hill Riesling is sourced from the sub-region of Polish Hill. Here ancient soils and elevated terrain yield a tightly structured showcase of ripe citrus and talc-like minerality.
