Our Sub-Regional wines
As a sub region flourishes, it seems only fitting we gather quality fruit and craft wines that tell the tale of vintage excellence. Below, you will discover wines from Polish Hill River, Marananga, High Eden and Oakville sub regions.
Marananga
Marananga is situated slightly northwest of the centre of the Barossa Valley floor, where its warm, dry conditions and rich red soil form the foundation for some of the region's most renowned wines. The terroir of Marananga is distinct, playing a crucial role in shaping the character of the grapes, particularly those of Shiraz.
Wines from this sub region feature unctuous juniper and blueberry characters, reminiscent of those occasionally found in Grange from that area.
Polish Hill River
Polish Hill River, a renowned sub region in the Clare Valley wine region, boasts distinctive features–slightly higher elevation, unique slate and shale soils, and cool nights with warm days– ideal for cultivating riesling. This supports the retention of acidity, enhancing the freshness and vibrancy of the wine, often resulting in citrus, floral and mineral characteristics.
Cellar Reserve Polish Hill River Riesling is a hand-crafted, small-batch wine that is an ode to the Polish Hill River sub region and our Cellar Reserve range. It offers lavender and citrus notes and can last over 20 years with careful cellaring.
High Eden
We source fruit from High Eden, a sub region within Eden Valley, for wines such as Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling in exceptional vintages. And whilst fruit sourcing for Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay varies, it is usually crafted from the best-performing sub region in the Adelaide Hills, including that of Piccadilly Valley.
"A definitive Penfolds style based on Grange-quality vineyards and central Barossa terroir. The purity of fruit, tannic seam and sympathetic maturation all deliver a strong individual identity."
- Peter Gago – Penfolds Chief Winemaker
