Penfolds and the art of blending
VARIETAL, VINEYARD AND VINTAGE REINTERPRETED THROUGH THE CRAFT OF BLENDING
At Penfolds, blending is at the heart of everything we do. Underpinning both our philosophy and technique, every wine in our portfolio is touched by its influence.
By uniting complementary varietals, vineyards, regions and now hemispheres and Houses, our winemakers craft wines through a relentless pursuit of quality.
Each bottle of Penfolds reflects the same enduring belief: the art of wine blending is revealed when individual components disappear into a seamless, superior whole.
"The magic happens in the blend."
- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

CREATING THE ART BEHIND THE BLEND
Penfolds Classification and Maturation Tastings
Creating a Penfolds blend begins long before the final assemblage. Classification tastings are a key stage each vintage. With only the varietal known, our winemakers taste each parcel – whether from barrel or tank – and assess them entirely on quality and stylistic potential.
This settles how parcels are allocated for maturation – whether in new or seasoned American or French oak, for example.
As the wines evolve, their assessment continues with further tastings, where winemakers taste the yet-to-be-bottled wines and shape each individual parcel towards a final expression.
Out of many tastings, the assemblage is created. The result is that each Penfolds wine is built on its own merit, with every component continually measured against House Style.

PENFOLDS MULTI-VARIETAL WINE BLENDING
The Great Australian Red Blend and GSM Wines
Few houses have explored the great Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz as deeply as Penfolds. Shiraz fills Cabernet's mid-palate with dark-fruited richness. Complementing Cabernet’s structure and fragrance, Shiraz brings harmony and complexity.
This blend is behind Bin 389, one of Australia’s most collected wines, and inspires Penfolds Superblend, a rare release that exalts a harmonious blend of special parcels destined originally for Grange and Bin 707.
It also finds expression in the savoury, finely structured FWT 543 Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah we craft in France and in the boldly generous Bin 600 Californian Cabernet Shiraz.
While shaped by different regions, each wine demonstrates the appeal of Cabernet Shiraz as one of the most enduring red wine blends.
A similar synergy emerges in blending Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (GSM), a multi-varietal style embodied by Bin 138.
The addition of Grenache adds complexity of flavour, but also brings approachability, creating a wine to explore in youth. Grenache’s soft texture and vibrant red fruit balances the richness of Shiraz, and the earthy, tannic detail of Mataro.

PENFOLDS MULTI-VINEYARD, MULTI-REGIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Wine Blending for the Consistency of House Style
For Penfolds, blending not only brings complexity, but provides a path to consistency, year on year.
By drawing from multiple vineyards and regions, our winemakers can select the finest fruit each vintage. This philosophy of unconstrained sourcing has guided our winemakers since the nineteenth century and continues to underpin the revered consistency of wines such as Grange, Bin 707 and Yattarna.
As seasonal conditions change, our blending adapts. This allows each wine to remain true to its unmistakable House Style.
“The Penfolds red stamp that adorns our labels also guards the character of every bottle.”
- Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

PENFOLDS MULTI-VINTAGE AND MULTI-HEMISPHERE BLENDS
Breaking Down Walls and Uniting Hemispheres
While multi-region blending ensures the consistency of House Style, Penfolds multi-vintage and multi-hemisphere winemaking creates wines that could not exist through a single region, vintage or country alone.
This gave rise to g3, g4 and g5, where multiple vintages of Grange entwine to create wines unlike any single vintage release. Penfolds V achieved a similarly evocative result with Yattarna Chardonnay, revealing a multi-dimensional kaleidoscope of aromas, flavours and textures.
With Quantum and Bin 149, Penfolds unites fruit from Australia and California to create some of the world's first multi-hemisphere blends. These Wines of the World captivate by challenging convention while remaining unmistakably Penfolds.
Grange La Chapelle represents an even bolder expansion of this philosophy. Blending two Houses, it unites South Australian Shiraz and Northern Rhône Syrah through a blend of Penfolds Grange and Jaboulet's La Chapelle Hermitage. This special project pursues as its raison d’etre the most complete and elevated expression of Shiraz / Syrah possible.
Across varietals, vineyards, hemispheres and even Houses, blending is the enduring philosophy at the heart of Penfolds. Not simply for what is brought together, but for the artistry which emerges when the seams disappear.
